The two essays which make up this work bear on the same question: in the study of "primitive" societies, how useful is the Marxist view of social development, historical materialism? Terray has resurrected what orthodox anthropologists of current schools consider to be the ghosts of anthropology -- evolutionism and materialism -- and interpreted them in an overall Marxist framework.
