This dictionary, containing alpproximately 4,000 entries, includes much of the vocabulary used in everyday speech by speakers of the Pintupi dialect of the Western Desert Language. As Loritja and Pintupi are very closely related much of this vocabulary is also used by Loritja speakers. Many vocabulary items of everyday speech still need recording, not to mention the specialised areas of terminology associated with plant and animal life. Some kinship and ceremonial terminology is included in this volume. Any vocabulary, however, that is used only by men has not been included because it would offend the Pintupi people if such items were seen by Aboriginal women and children. It is recognised that further study will reveal that English glosses can be expanded to more adequately express the meanings of Pintupi words. This publication is therefore considered tentative. This material was compiled at Papunya by K. C. & L.E. Hansen of the Summer Institute of Linguistics over a period of six years, 1966-1971.
