The Mirror is the first known spiritual text to be written in French, and as such it is surprising to discover that the author is a woman. This translation is an effort to acquaint English-speaking people with an enigmatic devotional text preceded by a lengthy introduction. The introduction is designed to place the Mirror in its proper historic parameters and spiritual dimension of its time. As it is such an early text rooted in the oral tradition containing a variety of mystical traditions, it surprisingly contains a quantity of feminine devotional practices which should be of great interest to a contemporary reader. The notes are designed to indicate biblical or theological allusions and to explain the symbols and encoded language which are woven throughout the text.
