As we approach the end of the third decade of generative grammar, it is difficult to think of many scholars, other than Chomsky, who have survived for a decade or more at the forefront of the field. Even some of the best have flourished for a comparatively short period before retiring to the shade. But Richard Kayne is one of the few to have been at the forefront of the field, or near it, for more than a decade. It is therefore a pleasure to welcome this volume of important papers, all of which were first published during the period from 1980 through 1983.
