Industrial Biotechnology in Europe
Issues for Public Policy
Description:... Industrial biotechnology is at the forefront of the new sciences. Europe was in the lead at the start, but its competitiveness against the US and Japan is now in doubt. What do industry and the research community need from the public agencies to help Europe regain its position? What kind of regulations and standards will best protect the public and the environment in this rapidly expanding, multidisciplinary field? Experts from all of the disciplines concerned with bioindustries met in Brussels in November 1985 to discuss these important questions. The 15 papers presented at the conference assessed the European scene, industry's needs, the social factors, and responses by the public sector. Participants concluded by drawing up a nine-point plan of priorities for action.
