The fifteen paintings and forty-one drawings by the great French artist Nicolas Poussin featured in this volume are from the collections of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. All of the paintings arrived in Russia in the second half of the eighteenth century when Catherine the Great established the renowned Hermitage Picture Gallery, an art-filled salon dedicated to conversation and relaxation for the tsarina and her court.
