In imitation of his royal master, Robert Spittel (taylor to James V.) founded an hospital for the relief of decayed tradesmen and merchants, near the port of St. Mary's Wynd, Stirling. There was another hospital dedicated to St. James, at the end of Stirling-bridge, which belonged to Cambus-Kemieth. And so early as the year 1233, the Blackfriars, or Dominicans, had a monastery near to the wall of this town, founded by Alexander ii f. It appears then, from this flight sketch of its history, that Stirling has been looked on as a place of considerable consequence, not only in latter, but also in former periods of our Scotish annals %. Before taking leave of Stirling, it were unfair not to mention the school established here for the instruction of youth in Latingrammar, writing, accounts, and various other branches of useful knowledge. Than David Doeg, ll.D. the learned and ingenious master of the grammar-school, there are few whose merits as teachers, and value as amiable members of society, better deserve to be remembered . The hospital of John Cowan is already mentioned. About the year 1725, John Allan, writer in Stirling, established another charitable foundation for maintaining, clothing, and educating fourteen boys.
