Und Worte reichen nicht
von der Mathematik in Deutschland zur Musik in Israel : eine jüdische Familiengeschichte 1812-1998
Description:... Memoirs of a German Jew, born in 1912 in Kiel, who studied music in Bonn and Köln. With the rise of the Nazi regime, he increased his activity in Hehalutz and was offered a position as a flute-player in the new Israeli Philharmonic orchestra, which permitted him to obtain a certificate for emigration to Palestine; he emigrated in 1936. His father, Otto Toeplitz, was dimissed from his position as professor of mathematics at the University of Bonn, organized a Jewish school for children who could not continue their studies at public schools, and after the "Kristallnacht" pogrom made desperate attempts to leave Germany. Finally, Toeplitz's parents managed to emigrate to Palestine in February 1939, and his sister followed shortly after. His brother, who lived in South Africa because of tuberculosis, died there in 1938.
