Working hard during the year and looking forward to holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving and most important Christmas. The café and grocery store the Bearden's operated in the little hamlet. The meeting place every morning for coffee, gossip and bus stop for the local children riding the school bus. The Bearden's working numerous jobs between 1938 and 1939, using their talents such as sewing, baking pastry's, paintings and carpentry worked. The family working as a team all saving and earning enough money to purchased a home and car. Howard Bearden, the son mentioned in the book and Jim, Howards father were well informed listening to news broadcast of the conflict in Europe. Both consumed as much information during limited news from magazines donated by a wealthy uncle. From the 1st Day of September 1939, after the German invasion's of Poland. Later invasion of the low country's in May 1940 such as France and Denmark. Sunday, December 7, 1941 a day of peace changed America. The two oceans to the East and West no longer safe barriers from Americas enemy's. Now the two oceans became a roadway from the East and West into the America's heartland. American civilians later suffered from rationing of food, cloths and gasoline as well as worry of love ones fighting across the globe. After the war ended, the Bearden's and their neighbors were known as "The Greatest Generation."
