Ada Karmi-Melamede, Architect
Life Sciences Buildings, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev
Description:... "At the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beer Sheva, Israel, the newly built life sciences complex has created the ideal meeting place for critical architecture and state-of-the-art science. The building program encompassed a life sciences building, an institute for applied biosciences and teaching laboratories for students. Following Ada Karmi-Melamede's masterplan for the university, the design also had to resolve urbanism issues as it inserts itself into the fabric of the campus. Bordering on the Negev Desert, this complex with a floor area of 14,500 sq. m. employs tactile materials and clear geometries throughout the project; in particular its differentiated use of concrete is striking. All its details such as the handrails or the sunshades, the skillful manipulation of light and space are examples of the thoughtful design of this structure. Helene Binet, the renowned architectural photographer, captured the building and its surrounding in wonderfully expressive images especially for this publication. From the very first plans to the final details, this book documents the genesis of the building, highlighting the design process through the juxtaposition of plans and photos. Documentary drawings such as sections and axonometrics drawn for this book explain the details in an instructive manner. The book thus becomes a source of inspiration for designers.
