And until Laura's death in 1957, hundreds and hundreds of children wrote to Laura to tell her how much they enjoyed her pioneer stories and how much they loved her for writing them. These letters are funny, heart-warming, and utterly unique. In them the children asked Laura about her family and told her about their own families. Some children sent handmade birthday cards and Valentines; some sent poems, drawings, or photographs. Many children called her by her first name, so dear a friend to them had she become. For as long as she could, Laura answered every letter by hand from her home at Rocky Ridge Farm, and she cherished and saved every one.
