Bonfire of the Certainties
Description:... Cliff Slaughter argues that 'the social system ruled by capital has entered its structural, historical crisis. This crisis is economic, political, social and moral, exemplified especially by 'overdevelopment' and the crisis of the modern family. For Marx the socialist revolution must be 'the human revolution', reasserting, at a higher level, the humanity and culture achieved by the first human revolution [that is, the beginning of humanity itself] . But what can we make today of Marx's assertion that the working class is the agency of this social revolution? Moreover, what is "class-consciousness"? How do we envisage the future "truly human' society"? How do we create a society that recognises the importance of free, disposable time, in terms of individual freedom, work, art, culture and creativity?
