The Remains of Distant Times
Archaeology and the National Trust
Description:... The National Trust owns approximately 40,000 archaeological sites in England, Wales and Northern Ireland - a huge responsibility, which makes its work in this area a focus of public attention and an example to other owners and planning authorities. During its centenary year the Trust, in close cooperation with the Society of Antiquaries, held a conference designed to highlight the important part archaeology now plays in the management of its properties - ancient monuments and landscapes, historic houses, and other historic buildings. These special studies on the archaeological work of the National Trust emphasise the Trust's concern with historic landscapes, their interpretation, conservation and accessibility. The pieces, ranging from the presentation of Avebury to the opportunities offered by the National Curriculum, demonstrate how archaeology integrates with and provides a historical context for other conservation disciplines: the National Trust is seen at work in numerous different ways recording, understanding, maintaining and managing its outstanding national archaeological resources.
