Florentine Drawing at the Time of Lorenzo the Magnificent
Papers from a Colloquium Held at the Villa Spelman, Florence, 1992
Description:... A 1992 exhibition at the Uffizi dedicated to "Il disegno fiorentino al tempo di Lorenzo il Magnifico", and commemorating the five-hundredth anniversary of the death of Lorenzo de' Medici forms the focus of this multi-lingual volume. Jointly sponsored by the Uffizi, the meeting at the Villa Spelman brought together curators and art historians from throughout the world to discuss the technique, function, meaning, and attribution of the extraordinary selection of drawings exhibited. The colloquium also made it possible to extend the range of debate beyond the exhibition to include works in other collections and other media, notably printmaking and painting. This volume includes many new observations about specific Florentine drawings from the later fifteenth century by such artists as Maso Finiguerra, Ghirlandaio, Michelangelo, Cosimo Rosselli, Signorelli, and Filippino Lippi. It also provides an indispensable introduction to recent research into the theory and practice of drawing at the time of Lorenzo the Magnificent, when artists such as Botticelli, Verrocchio, Leonardo da Vinci, and Filippino Lippi were exploring new possibilities for both figuration and expression.
