The Fate of Borderline Patients
Successful Outcome and Psychiatric Practice
Description:... Providing long-term follow-up data on some 502 consecutively admitted patients hospitalized at a state psychiatric institute over a 14-year period, this study explores the fate of persons in an intermediate range of emotional handicap--specifically borderline schizophrenic, manic-depressive, and schizophreniform patients. Multivariate analysis of the follow-up data is conducted, important correlations between the various factors examined and the outcomes for the 502 patients are established, and illuminating case vignettes are presented. Among the items documented in the follow-up survey are:
* rehospitalization
* subsequent therapy
* work history
* social network
* avocational interests
* and marital and child-rearing status.
