The Effects of Protectionism on a Small Country
The Case of Uruguay
Description:... World Bank Discussion Paper 230. Based on four country studies and extensive household surveys, this paper documents the breakdown of traditional farming systems in Sub- Saharan Africa and its implications for the role of women in agriculture. A considerable loss of agricultural productivity and output has resulted from the growth of female-headed households in the region, and the disadvantaged and insecure access of these families to basic agricultural inputs. This paper reviews gender patterns and productivity of agricultural labor, access to agricultural technology and extension services, access to agricultural credit, and the role of land rights. Recommendations are made for improving the productivity of women farmers, who produce three- quarters of the region's basic foodstuffs. More than 50 tables and figures analyze agricultural production and productivity in Burkina Faso, Kenya, Nigeria, and Zambia.
