Contributions to North American Ethnology
Volume 4 [Houses and House-life of the American Aborigines]
Description:... Volume 4 examines the architecture and the influences of architecture on the social life of many North American Indians. One of the aspects the author surmised from his study of the architecture was that the family unit seemed insufficient to face all the struggles necessary for life, so larger organizations of several families were most common in North America, rather than single-family households. The author also noted that households tended be formed of related individuals, making kinship between the families of mothers and families of their children an important aspect of the social organization and living arrangements.
