A Preliminary Identification of Processes and Problems Affecting Marine Birds in Coastal and Offshore Areas of British Columbia

"With increasing population growth in the Georgia basin and other coastal areas of British Columbia, conflicts between marine birds and human activities (development, industry, recreation, fishing, etc.) are likely to increase. In addition, there is growing evidence that since approximately 1990, several species of seabirds have declined dramatically off much of the west coast of North America. Research and monitoring of marine and shoreline birds in British Columbia have been undertaken by several agencies, universities, museums and individuals. Although there has been a wide variety of topics covered by this work, much of it has not been coordinated towards a common goal. The purpose of this report is to review past and present work on marine birds, identify critical gaps in our knowledge, identify areas of known (or suspected) importance to these birds, and recommend some priorities for research and monitoring.
