Şerban Savu
Paintings 2005-2010
Description:... Under the Radar presents a period in Romanian history when, after fifty years behind the Iron Curtain, people were abruptly exposed to new values and ways of living. In coming to terms with the new freedoms available to them - the ability to travel, the right to creative and political freedom of expression and access to new international products - people looked both to continue aspects of their former lives and find different ways of engaging with the new context. Serban Savu's paintings examine the daily routines and habits of people in modern Romania, revealing personal and communal activities while at work and leisure. People are depicted picnicking on small patches of grass between concrete blocks of flats; swimming and fishing in urban waterways; and standing on building sites, by roadsides and in neglected railway stations.
