Deutsch-jüdische Geschichte und Hirnforschung
Ludwig Edingers Neurologisches Institut in Frankfurt am Main
Description:... A collection of articles, tracing the history of German neurological research and the role of Jews in this field. Ch. 9 (pp. 347-407), "'Er sah übrigens aus wie ein Gorilla': In der Begegnung mit dem Neurologen Ludwig Edinger wurde der Zoologe Victor Franz zum Antisemiten" (co-authored by Uwe Hossfeld), discusses Franz's complex and ambivalent relationship with his Jewish employer Edinger, head of a private neurological research instititute. Franz, a follower of Darwin, worked in Edinger's institute between 1910-12. During this period there were conflicts between the two concerning Franz's research, and a mutual antipathy which, on Franz's side, turned into antisemitic resentment. He was dismissed in October 1912. In memoirs written in 1913, and revised and edited in 1930, when he was already a member of the NSDAP, Franz expressed his antisemitism.
