Perspectives from the Disciplines
Stanford Online High School
Description:... In this companion volume, Scarborough and Ravaglia present a series of essays written by senior instructors, and division heads at the Stanford Online High School in which these themes are further developed and explored. Written from the perspective of the practitioner, these essays discuss in detail the challenge of teaching particular disciplines, accomplishing particular pedagogical objectives, and fostering the habits of mind characteristic of students who have received deep education in the discipline. Also included are perspectives from counseling, students services, and student life which discuss how a truly international community is developed and fostered in the online environment and how the relationships that students form therein are in many ways deeper and more intimate than typically found in secondary schools. While applicable to anyone considering bringing a traditional course online, these discussions are cast more broadly and examine the value and purpose of a traditional liberal arts education in an era where endless curricular opportunities are at hand."
