A Virginian by birth, bound to his native state by ties strong and influential, the outbreak of the war brought to thomas, as it brought to many another army officer of South ern birth, great trial - trial to which hundreds proved unequal; but he was among the few who esteemed their country greater than their state; who felt that their oath of fealty to the Government was as binding against treason as it was to service against a foreign foe.
