The gas used in gas lamps is generated by water, in minute quantities, dropping on acetylene (carbide of calcium); the gas thus formed passes from the generating chamber into the body of the lamp and is con sumed at the lava tips, which are placed in front of a highly polished mirror. The genera tors in some cases are separated from the lamp itself and placed on the dashboard, or under the hood, a rubber hose conveying the gas to the lamp.
