Description:... In 1933, 8,520 of Mainfranken's ca. 800,000 inhabitants were Jews. The Jews lived mainly in the city of Würzburg, where they numbered 2,145 and made up 2.1% of the population. The Jews comprised 1-2% of the population in the other towns as well. Pp. 42-523 trace the growth of antisemitism and persecution in 1933-41 in Würzburg and elsewhere in Mainfranken. Gives details on several towns and districts, e.g. Alzenau, Aschaffenburg, Brückenau, Gerolzhofen, Hammelburg, Hofheim, Bad Kissingen, Steinach a.d. Saale, Kitzingen, Marktheidenfeld, Bad Neustadt a.d. Saale, Obernburg, and Ochsenfurt. Pp. 524-636 examine the persecution of Jews in Mainfranken in 1941-43. Deportations began in November 1941; the Jews were sent to Riga, the Lublin area, and Theresienstadt, and later from Theresienstadt to Auschwitz. By August 1943, 2,065 Jews had been deported from Mainfranken to death camps. The rest of the Jews in the region had either emigrated or their fate remained unknown.
