On the Heating of the Polar Upper Atmosphere
Description:... "On the basis of the atmospheric composition given by F.S. Johnson in 1960, the contribution of auroral particles to the dissociation of oxygen molecules in the polar upper atmosphere is investigated. ... The heating of the polar mesosphere by exothermic association of the oxygen atoms, intensified by the subsidence of the upper polar atmosphere during the polar night, is calculated and found to be close to the estimate given by W.W. Kellogg in 1961. The investigation indicates, however, that Kellogg's estimate should be reduced slightly to allow for the cooling effect produced by far infrared emission from atomic oxygen in the upper atmosphere."--Page i.
