Racially Differentiated Student Withdrawal from the Baccalaureate Nursing Major as Related to Faculty Empathy, 1971-72
Description:... 1. Racially differentiated student withdrawal rates and patterns were found among fifty-four programs dichotomizing PB programs from PW programs. The PB programs had lowest non-white withdrawal rates, greatest number of educational and social adjustment programs, particularly Remediation and Motivation. Qualitatively, PB adjustment programs offered more opportunities for student-teacher and student-peer contact outside the classroom. The PW programs had highest withdrawal rates. As non-white enrollment increased up to 24 percent, the percentages of programs with high withdrawal rates increased. PW programs had the least, four, educational and social adjustment programs. Qualitatively two provided for student-teacher contact outside the classroom: Faculty Advisement and Individual Counseling. Two-thirds of the non-white ex-students were from PW programs and corroborated the estimated use of programs by Non-whites.
