Suggesting that students can be independent thinkers and writers, this book helps teachers implement an effective factual thinking and writing program into elementary, middle, and high schools. It demonstrates six different models of factual writing: narratives, procedures, descriptions, reports, explanations, and arguments. An introduction is followed by six parts, each treating one of the six text type or genres. The overall structure of these lessons is described in detail at the end of the instruction. The models are divided into three chapters. The first chapter in each part describes and models a specific type of factual text. These models may be copied for demonstration purposes. This chapter contains writing frames that illustrate the structure of a factual text and are intended to guide writers and to model thinking frames for demonstration. Thinking frames are designed to help students record and manipulate information prior to writing a specific type of factual text. They are designed to evoke specific kinds of factual thinking and are prepared so they may be photocopied for classroom purposes. Assessment rubrics for each type of factual text and thinking frame are also included in the first chapter. The second chapter provides oral, visual, and written language activities designed to support the practice of specific techniques useful for the writing of a specific type of factual text. These can be referenced when teachers design their factual thinking and writing programs. The third chapter provides model programs presented as activities that demonstrate how the thinking and writing frames might be used in practice. Each set of these activities has a similar structure, but within this structure, the activities model numerous approaches to teaching and learning.
