Tales of a Pioneer Journalist
From Gold Rush to Government Street in 19th Century Victoria
Description:... David Higgins, a muscular 24-year-old newspaperman from Halifax, via San Francisco, landed in Esquimalt in 1858 and trudged into Victoria amidst a horde of dreamers. After a stint in Yale on the front lines of the gold rush, he returned to Victoria as one of Amor de Cosmos' first employees at the British Colonist. His initial assignment was to cover a battle raging in Victoria's harbour between the Hydah and Stickeen peoples. He started his own Daily Chronicle, which he soon consolidated with the original de Cosmos publication. Six years later his newspaper was simply known as the Colonist. In 1886, Higgins was elected to the provincial legislature and left the Colonist behind. He became BC's second Speaker of the House in the 1890s. In retirement he wrote two widely acclaimed books that form the basis of this book.
