Stein and the Era of Reform in Prussia, 1807-1815 (Classic Reprint)
Description:... Excerpt from Stein and the Era of Reform in Prussia, 1807-1815 The literature of prussian-german history in Eng lish is very scanty and most of it relates to the last seventy-five years. The period covered by this brief biography has been treated by Seeley in his Life and Times of Stein. That diffuse work is nevertheless a very substantial composite of the German historical work available forty years ago. It does a little more for Stein biographically than can be found in Pertz's undigested collection of documents. The appearance of Lehmann's great biography and the controversial literature it aroused and of many special studies and new interpretations of men and of phases of the his tory of the years after Frederick the Great have made both Pertz and Seeley unsatisfactory. With this new material at hand it was clearly worth while to study anew the work of Stein. In doing this I have especially sought to give even in this brief compass a more ade quate account than has hitherto been available in Eng lish of the economic conditions preceding the edict of 1807 and to point out that its importance is as a pro gram rather than as a reorganization of the Prussia of that day.
