To be used by researchers, this specialized supplement to the general "Guide to the National Archives of the United States" (1974) employs an historical approach to describe pre-federal, federal, and non-federal holdings relating to American Indians. Included are Continental Congress and Revolutionary War records. Records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs are subdivided according to its various divisions such as law and probate, forestry, health, Alaska, finance, statistics, and numerous others. Records of the Office of the Secretary of the Interior are divided into its appropriate divisions such as Indian Division, Lands and Railroads, Finance, Appointments, Water and Power, and others; included are cartographic and audiovisual records. Military records encompass holdings within the Office of the Secretary of War, the Army, the Navy, and others. Congressional, Departmental, and Bureau records are included along with records of special projects, committees, and services. Non-federal records include the War Department Collection of Confederate records, records of former Russian agencies, and holdings in the National Archives Gift Collection. Guidance to areas of specific interest is provided by a detailed table of contents and a 55-page index. (Mm).
