Action Against Child Labour 2008-2009
Ipec Progress and Future Priorities
Description:... The effective abolition of child labour is one of the most important human rights issues of our time. For the International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC), the challenges have been compounded by the present global financial crisis, natural disasters and war. The ILOs most recent studies reveal that more than 200 million children worldwide are still subject to child labour. This latest report from the IPEC, which reviews efforts to implement effective strategies to mitigate child labour, indicates that although there have been clear signs of progress, gaps in the global response still remain. The key objectives of this report are to critically assess the IPEC projects undertaken in the ILO member States and to outline points for developing a more coherent, more sustained global effort to eradicate child labour. The review covers the IPECs response to the global economic downturn, child trafficking and the lessons learned by the IPEC after a decade of fighting this form of modern slavery, and the work accomplished through the IPECs pursuit of interagency cooperation. The report concludes with an extensive overview of the ILOs Strategic Policy Framework for 20102015, which will serve as the overarching framework for the work of the ILO during the coming three biennia.
