Der Ambraser Schüttelkasten
eine Ausstellung des Kunsthistorischen Museums, Schloss Ambras Innsbruck, 6. April bis 5. Juni 2017
Description:... The Ambraser Schüttelkasten' (literally a 'jiggle box') is one of the most extraordinary objects of Archduke Ferdinand's II Chamber of Art and Curiosities. A wooden box lined with real moss forms the "habitat" of small creatures like turtles and snakes. A scorpion and even a fantastic winged dragon-like creature are located between multitudes of real snail shells. Balanced by lead counter-weights and loosely attached to eyelets and small wooden pegs, these tiny cardboard creatures made of painted wood begin to shake and jiggle whenever someone touches the box, creating the impression that they are alive. Freshly restored, the unique Kunstkammer objet d'art of the imitation of nature with outstanding artistry and technical skill shines in new splendour. Exhibition: Schloss Ambras, Innsbruck, Austria (06.04.-05.06.2017).
