Nitric Oxide
Basic Research and Clinical Applications
Description:... This work deals with mediation by nitric oxide (NO) of many biological functions. Nitric oxide was initially known as endothelial derived relaxing factor (EDRF, Furchgott, Zawadzki 1980). Nowadays, its significance has reached clinical applications. The clinical significance of nitric oxide encompasses: application of NO-donors such as nitroglycerin and other organic nitrates or sydnonimines in cardiovascular diseases; exploitation of stimulation of nitrergic nerves in bronchial asthma or treatment of male impotence; resuscitation of fading endothelial function in diabetes or atherosclerosis by using drugs which stimulate vascular endothelium; protection of vascular or cardiac transplants from rejection; regulation of renal function; management of septic shock patients; and many other applications.
