Fifty Great American Silent Films 1912-1920: A Pictorial Survey

This book is an excellent, profusely illustrated introduction and appreciation of the early silent film years which covers fifty feature films, some of which are now lost (with no copies currently known to exist). Co-author Edward Wagenknecht had the advantage of having seen first hand most of the films he critiques and of having had conversations with many of the silent film stars and directors as well. About Co-Author Edward Wagenknecht: Edward (Charles) Wagenknecht (March 28, 1900—May 24, 2004) was an American literary critic and teacher, who specialized in 19th century American literature. His first published work was Lillian Gish: An Interpretation, a pamphlet which was published in Seattle by the University of Washington Bookstore in 1927. He subsequently wrote and edited many books on literature and movies, and taught for many years at various universities, including the University of Chicago and Boston University. He received his PH.D. in 1932 from the University of Washington, where he taught from 1925 to 1943. He also contributed many book reviews and other writings to such newspapers as the Boston Herald, The New York Times, and the Chicago Tribune and to such magazines as The Yale Review and The Atlantic Monthly.
