Sie bildet die Grundlage seiner gesamten Musiktheorie und somit den Schlüssel zum Verständnis seines Werks. Erstmals wird nun die Akkordlehre ins Zentrum einer umfassenden Untersuchung gestellt und ausgehend von Chorons gedruckten sowie unveröffentlichten Schriften erklärt. Die Studie legt überdies die Quellen für Chorons Konzepte offen und geht der Verbreitung seiner Lehre im Detail nach.
Chorons musiktheoretische Schriften enthalten explizite Bezüge auf eine Vielzahl von Autoren des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts. Infolgedessen waren seine Werke damals wie heute häufig dem Vorwurf ausgesetzt, unübersichtlich und konservativ zu sein. Dagegen zeigt die Analyse der Akkordlehre im musiktheoretischen Kontext ihrer Zeit, wie stark Choron die Rezeption fremdsprachiger Theorien gefördert und den tonalité-Diskurs zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts mitgeprägt hat. Die Studie liefert damit einen Beitrag nicht nur zur französischen, sondern auch zur europäischen Geschichte der Musiktheorie im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert.
In the music-theoretical writings of the Paris-based cultural politician, author and musician Alexandre Étienne Choron (1772-1834), the theory of chords plays an important role. It forms the foundation of his whole theory of music and thus the key to understanding his work. Now for the first time his theory of chords is the focus of a comprehensive study and is examined on the basis of both his published and unpublished works. The study also reveals the sources of Choron’s ideas and traces in detail the transmission of his theory.
Choron’s music-theoretical works contain explicit references to many authors of the 18th and 19th centuries. As a result, his works have often been accused, both then and now, of being confusing and conservative. However, an analysis of the chord theory in the music theoretical context of its time shows how strongly Choron promoted the reception of foreign theories and contributed to the discourse around tonalité in the early 19th century. Thus the study is a contribution to the history of music theory not only in France but also throughout Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries.
