The catalogue of an exhibition held in the Jüdisches Museum Wien between 18 January-10 March 2006, on the life and work of Manès Sperber, who was born in 1905 in eastern Galicia, from where his family fled in 1916 to Vienna. In 1927 Sperber joined the Communist party. In 1933 he was arrested in Berlin and expelled from Germany. He fled via Prague, Vienna, and Italy to Paris, where he became active in Anna Segher's literary resistance circle. In 1937 he withdrew from the Communist party and enlisted in the French Foreign Legion in order to avoid being arrested as an enemy alien in 1939. In 1942 he succeeded in fleeing to Switzerland with his second wife and their son. After the war they returned to Paris.
