Changes, Chances and Challenges
Europe 2000
Description:... The security predicament of Europe is very different from ten years ago and the solution is still far from clear. Changing concepts of security have acquired new roles in the thinking in European and global institutions and have, in turn, been transformed by these roles. Economic, ecological and societal security have grown in importance. The agenda of peace research has always included the issues of peace and war, changes in armaments and the possibilities of conversion. Other questions, such as patterns of dominance and dependence were added later. There are also recent themes calling for new priorities. One of these is the implications for the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts of the fact that most major conflicts in Europe today have strong ethnic components. Another is the rapid and unprecedented transformation of societies in Central and Eastern Europe, and the actual and potential relations among them. This book, a product of the European Peace Research Association, written by authors from all parts of Europe, deals with the changes, chances and challenges in Europe today.
