Happy Birthday to You
Description:... This unusual, sensitively told story will have special meaning for special children and their families -- but it also will be long remembered by every child who reads it. While riding his bicycle, Sam sees a girl sitting beneath a tree, reading a book. A wind gust blows her hat from her head, and Sam brings it back to her, then discovers that she has almost no hair on her head. The children become friends, and Sam learns that the girl, Lily, is receiving medical treatment for cancer. Will she recover? Lily's birthday is coming, but she is also scheduled to go to the hospital for treatment. On a star-filled evening, Sam tells his new friend that he will give her a birthday gift, a make-believe birthday cake formed from stars in the sky, and the children make the wish that Lily's medical treatment will restore her health. Sam is alone on the night of her birthday, but as he shapes her imaginary birthday cake with his hands, glowworms flutter around his fingers like candles on the cake. This seems to be a very good sign! There are beautiful full-color illustrations throughout.
